I seem to find mushrooms in bulk and then none for ages so I wondered are the mushrooms seasonal?

I find that as well. I guess you could call it seasonal, but I think it is more in tune with the law of averages, as that is how the game is programed. You could also overlooking them. Some will pop up in areas that are hard to see! Say in a flower patch.
