The fastest way that I know is to assign a few villagers to research and just let them do the job.
You may also encounter Island Events from time to time that can have some effect on different Techs depending on how they are handled. My advice is: consider carefully what action to take, not eveything is as it seems, for example, just because you hear a growling, doesn't mean there is always danger...It's a gamble.
