can someone please tell me how to make use of that hut..it is really grating on my nerves that its a school and no one is getting taught

Once you convert the hut, that's all you can do. For fun, you can click on the drum next to the school and the kids will come running but other than that, nothing physically to do.

The school will also allow parents to pass some of their skills on to their offspring, but this is a passive effect (you don't need to do anything aside from make more villagers for this to happen).

You can also click on the drum to call school to session, but all that happens is the kids will gather in front of the hut -- they don't gain skills this way.

You may also see villagers "teaching" (esp. later in the game), but that's a behavior like chatting or telling a joke -- it doesn't have any effect, either.
