Personal opinion, get that third level of farming before anything else. It may hold off your puzzle solving a little longer but once you have that, you'll never worry about food. You can start growing your population and once you have more villagers, everything goes much, much faster (more people to work!).
However, if your villagers are starting to get "old", you may need to grab that level 2 of medicine to hold on to your workers a little longer.

Until you get the next level of farming, it seems you're probably right on target with room for one or two more.
If you get too big in the population before you research all of the farming, you risk starving your villagers while waiting for crops to come in.

Hey, no problem! I'm so addicted to these darn games that I seem to no longer have a life... lol.
And while I'm waiting for my next tech level or my baby fish to grow up, may as well browse the forum!
Hope your game goes well, have fun!

Complete farming, then go for construction so that you can increase your population, then science so that you can have your master scientists rack up those tech points to get the higher cost skills.

SCTNE, I'm not sure that construction techs have anything to do with housing, I think they only relate to certain puzzles that require a builder. My understanding is that your builders will automatically start building huts when the population hits certain levels. For example, once you get to about 27 or 28 villagers, you will start building a new hut.
Because of this, I usually wait on the last construction level and go for science first to speed up research. My games seem to go faster that way.

SaxyT, you do need th builders at top level in order go get some of the puzzles that link to 'special events' or you won't get them solved. Yes, I agree that science would increase tech points quickly, but I was after the puzzles the first time - I completed the game after 129 real time hours. This is great!

onica, I can't really answer that without more info.
What's your population when they die, what tech levels do you have and what's your food situation at?
Just a guess without the above info, but is it possible (since it takes a while to get tech levels) that you are doing no breeding at all and your villagers are dying of old age?
It's true that you need all your farming before you can grow a large population in this game but the villagers do age so make sure you have at least a few little rugrats running around.
