The crops are on their own timer. So once the start their cycle, you really do not need to plant and water. They will come up at their set time. I try and keep all of my villagers doing more productive tasks while I’m waiting for the crops to come in.

If you click on the garden, it will tell you how long it will be until your crops are in.
