How do I "start" chapter two?

Some sites claim that you have to wait for a volcano. But since my experiences have been that other than crafting the sites are in general wrong, I wanted to check here.

Once again, nevermind. I had to close out and reopen but yeah, it happened.

I get the feeling my characters are stupid. Even if I set them to prefer building they kept trying to take off and wash their feet instead of rebuilding their homes. One even seemed to know I was going to pick him up and put him right back to building because as soon as my mouse cursor started for him he'd start trying to run.
