Hold the shovel. If you're holding the shovel, you'll ignore the plants and pick up whatever else is there, unless there's some glitch keeping it there.
Don't tap too much, if the "Dig" thingy shows up on screen, unhighlight the shovel and then highlight it and try to pick it up.
