If your mouse has batteries, get new ones. If it's got a ball, clean it and the rollers.

Haywire is a pretty broad description. Can you be more specific?
If it is moving erratically?
Wireless check batteries; obstruction between mouse and computer,
Corded check for dirt and make sure it's a smooth surface
If moving opposite of input (goes right when moved left etc) correct settings in control panel
If only haywire in one program, try restoring default settings for that program
If none of these work, try a different mouse. If problem persists on two or more mice computer is suspected. In that case scan for viruses or faulty controller.

also, is the mouse alive? Do you own a cat?
