I have about 20 Apples pears and orange trees planted and when there all dropped from the tree it says that I have 18 or so days to sustain the town, then the next day it's all completely gone and and then it's back to 2-3 days worth of food. What's up with that?

Fruit trees take several days to produce fruit, since they have to mature, produce flowers, and produce ripe fruit. The fruit is not harvestable until it falls to the ground. If you want to rely on fruit trees as your only source of food, you will need to plant a few trees each day for several days in order to make sure that fruit ripens and falls every day.

Sorry about that, I've corrected that article to mention that fruit (not planted vegetables) left on the ground will disappear at the start of the new day.
