I closed my app while in the eye level view and when I opened it up again there was a beetle almost as big as the Mayor! It disappeared before I could catch it but it was kinda creepy!

There are at least two big beetles and yeah, they can be intimidating. I assume the one you saw was crawling around on the ground. Catch him if you can - he's much less intimidating in your Inventory!
