I think when you've just started a game the peeps tend to live less long, only up to their mid-50s or so. As the generations go on they get more money and they are therefore better fed, and the player is likely to buy items like the hand gel and vitamins that probably they couldn't afford before. The age at which most peeps die tends to go up by ten years or so accordingly.
