There is a very simple way to prevent 'losing' the game, and that's to make sure that you back up your savegame files at the beginning of each generation. You can see how to back them up here. That way, if the 'unthinkable' happens and a generation can't continue, you can restore the savegame file and replay that generation without having to start completely over.
