There were technical difficulties with the way that the iPhone and iPod handle the graphic implementation that was used for darkness in Virtual Families. Even though your family knows when it's day and night (coinciding with actual day/night cycles in the real world), it never gets dark on the iPhone version.

You can, however, reverse day and night on the Options screen if you find that your family always wants to sleep when you want to play the game.
