It seems like they go to sleep eventually even if you don't put them to bed, don't they? I finally gave up trying to put the kids to bed if they weren't tired, and in the morning they seem to have just as much energy as the ones who did go to bed.
Yes, they will put themselves to bed when the game is closed and it is night-time for them.
In my opinion, they actually prefer for you not to be there. I should say, in my experience they get more rest when the game is not open during their night-time and putting them to bed doesn't actually DO anything. If you reopen the game later, they will be in random spots, just like always (even if it's only one minute later.)
But what I mean when I say I feel like they prefer for you not to be there when they sleep - if you think about it, could you sleep with someone watching you like a hawk? Especially if you think a big hand is going to come from the sky at any moment and snatch you up? hehe
