I almost didn't open this thread thinking it would be another one about a child's head spinning around. lol
I have always been a firm believer in the nasty candy, but after many, many families, I've finally had two kids that actually repeated the behavior after candy had been given.
If their happiness level is at the elated level, don't be afraid to use the red hand. Then, place them at a task that you can immediately give them the green hand for. The best way to get them to stop something that annoys you to death is to train them in the same way you train an adult to work. (Train them to do something else using the green hand.) Make them study or swim or dance or play with toys, in the sand, etc. Choose only two of those things and praise no more than twice in a row, then switch to the other and praise for that. Soon enough, you'll find those are the only things they'll want to do.
