I am having trouble installing mods with .rar files. What can I do to overcome this? I am using windows and have had no problems to speak of with other mods forms.

Neither Windows nor Mac OS has built-in capability to extract files from .rar archives. We encourage mod creators to package their mods as .zip files, which can be opened by both operating systems, but it's really up to each person how they package their mods. You can find a helpful discussion about .rar files and how to work with them here.

You can download a trial version of WinRAR from http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

The trial period is 40 days, and apart from a couple of abilities most users are unlikely to need, the trial is of the full version.

I have Winrar, which I bought from Rarlabs back in 2005 and love it. But there are several "free" programs on the web now that can open both zip and rar. One of them is called 7zip. There are others, but I will have to research them to get you the names of more of them. If you do a web search and type in "rar extractors" though, you should be able to find several. If you have a Mac, let me know and I'll help more.

32x = 32 bit

64x = 64 bit

Does that help do you have a 32 bit operating system or a 64 bit?

Most people have a 32-bit OS. I'm sure you'd know if you had the 64-bit version of Windows, so go for the 32-bit version.
