What is purpose of having a pet?

I am having trouble collecting insrct. It has bee a long time on all of my families since one appeared. Is this suppose to happen?

I found more bugs pop up when it rains, and when you use the blue rain forest bottle in store inventory. I tried the yellow bottle, but never know when it wears off like the rain.
