I've had that happen too. My 1st generation husband died, and then his wife remarried. What happens on the family tree is the one who dies is replaced with the new guy.

If a couple is childless though, the whole game is lost. I think this is unfair

You could make a new family just to try it so you won't lose anything if they die out.
