You can recover a deleted savegame as long as a new game hasn't been started in that slot. Look here for the file location and names. Find the backup file and rename it to become the primary file for that slot (e.g. if the game in slot 4 was deleted, rename Virtual Families24.ldw to Virtual Families4.ldw).
