Personally I see nothing wrong with time travelling, but to each his own of course. I've never had a problem with it in-game nor has it caused my laptop or other programs any harm. And I do use my laptop for work- I just make sure I time travel "sensibly".

That means only changing the time a little bit at once, then pause the game, set the clock back to where it belongs, and do it again. That way the clock never gets much past where it ought to be. I haven't had any problems with the in-game store doing it this way, either.

If people are changing their clock a great deal- many hours at once, or letting extra days accumulate and stuff like that- then yeah I can see where that may be a bad idea if one has things scheduled. I really don't think it could break a computer though or cause it to need any sort of special maintenance!
