I have read on here that people have a couple different families...how do you do this? Is it only after your first family had a kid that grows up? If I click start over, does that kill my current family? I just started yesterday, but I get bored waiting for stuff to happen with just one family!

If you click on "Menu", then click on the player name, you'll see that you can have up to 5 players on one game. This means that you can have up to 5 different families, at once!
