I had Nick's point of view also. I thought, when I started the game that all the children could remain at home (or at least that it might be an option) and contribute to the income of the family. Once I found out they couldn't and that only one could return, I was glad none of the five families had more than three children and decided future families might only have one child...
But now three of my five families have moved on to the second generation and I'm aiming for 6 kids in every family. Almost all of my second generation kids had low paying jobs that didn't seem likely to progress to anything approaching the income of their parents. And in all three of these games the second generation kids are (so far at least) real slackers when it comes to work. I haven't heard this many "nos" since Virtual Villagers.
