In my game play, I have noticed that collectibles are a good way to make money. Keeping your little buddies working is always a good thing. The down side to making them work a lot is they may become tired. Let them nap/sleep if that is what they are going to do. You can also force them to go to bed when they are tired/exhausted.
Another thing you can do is buy magazines that relate to their work. There are 3 different magazines for the 3 different work areas. The kitchen, office, or workshop. By buying these magazines and giving them to the person who works in that area, it will increase their experience and give you a little money back.
