I suggest praising them right away when they even begin to try to work at the career. If they walk off, check to see what they are going to do before you scold them. Then just put them back at the work area and repeat smile I think this will help prevent confusion and apathy.

that is what i do, i rarely scold only when drawing on wall, piking on fish etc., i reward good behaviour and if they walk away from something i want them to do i just put them back until they get it . it seems to work pretty well with my families smile
