Do I have to do something special before I can get the knob? I've been dragging people on it, but they just don't care.

Just make sure that the white circle of the person selected is around the item. That should make them pick it up. Otherwise, are you sure you are attempting to pick that up, and not one of the toys in the area?

Thanks - I just wasn't putting him directly on top of it. I had figured he was close enough, but I was wrong.

How do you get the key out?

1. First of all you need to find the doorknob which is in the sand box.

2.Get one of your villagers or people to go retreive the doorknob.

3.After you have put the doorknob back in the handle spot drag your villager to the mat at the doorway entrance to the main house.

4.Your persons action box will say,"Unlocking Shed door" give the person time to go to the shed and you will have opened the door.

5.From there on out you can probably acheive two trophies from that, and also a disaster. Such as:The stove on fire,(disaster)Lint dryer burning,(disaster)Getting water for the repaired hose,(Trophy, first you need to purchase waterproof tape to repair it)And from the repaired hose,You can purchase a paint can and mix it with water, or you can buy something for the bird bath/fountain and conect the hose or bring water to it.
