Check that they have food in the fridge, mine didn't and I stocked up and they were happier.
Try putting in them in front of the tv, computer so they can relax.
If they want kids, I found that when my woman had a baby, they were both much happier.
With one of my men, he actually gets happy when he works.

Oh and praising them helps too. But not too much or they get annoyed.

Buying candy in the store helps, too. Also let them just do their own thing for awhile. Working too much seems to depress them.

And, if you can afford it, an upgrade to the house helps, too. My family seem to get endless hours of enjoyment from weighing themselves and using the heated towel rail since I upgraded the bathroom. smile

I also saw a tip shown at the beginning of the game that they don't like living in a messy house, so try to clear away all odd socks, wrappers, etc.

ALl the things mentioned helps as does having a clean house - throwing out wrappers and picking up socks, and taking the trash out to the garbage. Peeps seem to like a clean house. Making a meal and sitting down to eat, if they are well fed they seem to be happier.

The first email to player I got seems to imply that they are happier when married too.
