I got the 3 master builders to open the crate, then one carried the gong piece to the area where the rest of them hang. Then it just disappeared! Now I try to put them back on the spot where the crate was and it says "retrieving gong piece" but nothing comes out. What happened to it??

Sometimes a villager is interrupted before the piece is in place and they drop it. Quit the game and launch it again, and the piece will be there to pick up again.

What pieces of gong do you have? If you have only one or two they store the pieces in the science hut until they've somewhere more permanent to keep them.
