Chapter 18
I don't know how to explain this to Pai. Maybe I'll ask Umi to help, he's good at telling stories. But, either way, Chimba has a second child. Her younger brother. And speaking of younger brothers, Ponui learns fast. I'm glad he helps me with healing. He might be able to heal if I get sick.
Chimba was getting slower each day, until Chief Pilipili finally told her to stop working. She was told to take time and raise her child.
Pai, obviously, was concerned for her mom and curious as to why she couldn't work. Bico finally felt that this was the time Umi had to tell Pai. So he talked to him.
"Please tell Pai a story about... children, Umi. I can't think of one."
"Okay. I think it is time for her to know."
So Umi called Pai for a story.
"Now Pai, I know how concerned you are for your mother, so I'm going to tell you a special story.
"Sometimes, a woman will ask the Guiding Hand if she can have another baby. If the conditions in the tribe are good, the Guiding Hand will grant that wish. A short time ago, your mother asked the Guiding Hand if she could have another baby. The Guiding Hand wisely decided that the time is right for a new child in the village, so granted your mothers wish.
But, when a woman is chosen by the Guiding Hand to have a new baby, that becomes her only responsibility until the child is 2 years old. She isn't allowed to do any of the usual work in the tribe until then. That's why your mom isn't working."
"Ok! Thank you, Umi."
