Does anyone have general guidelines for when you can try breeding new combination/ get rarer eggs? I'm about to finish my level 3 research. Should I buy the mid-level eggs?

with your third level complete you can buy any eggs and they will survive and all cross breeding will survive.

Well put it this way, when I had my 2nd level complete, I could have any fish eggs.
