I have a full tablet collectible (Full ALL collectibles) in one tribe, but I've never missed a rare except once in a blue moon.

My method is do grab a child, then push '4' on the number pad to look for turtleshells. Then '9' to look for coral. If tablets aren't complete, I'd push '2', also, while never letting go of the child. Then I examine each region (defined by my twisted mind) around each number on the number pad, so that each region I search overlaps. I never pause unless I've already found my collectible.

I've noticed that villagers seem to have a job they prefer, just as CFII has stated that each villager learns at a different speed. It could simply be that the villager, while not having a dislike for the job, is not proficient at it, and needs more skill to take it up on its own.

This part of the game is kind of opaque to us without input from the devs, though, and is guesswork on my part.

I don't think this ability, or the leadership 3 ability, are magical at all. They have perfectly normal explanations. Teaching is teaching after all, and you can do it without magic. Also, the fluff text for Leadership three says the chief can "help a child locate a rare collectible," not that he uses magic to create one.

I think the magic food is the only explicitly magical ability that the chief has. (Outside things like the rain dance.) It could be that the magic helps his audience be taught - but a teacher still needs to be a teacher to impart knowledge.

I've seen this as well. In villages that got neglected for some reason, there are still enough skilled villagers to keep it going, born from the parents. (Though MANY slackers appear, too, many more than in VV1 and VV2.) Having parents both highly skilled in the same skill would probably increase the chances of this.

One time when the chief 'points out a rare collectible' and nothing appears is when it's raining. During the rain (and I think just after) no collectibles appear: they are all converted to mushrooms.

I have researched all 56 combinations of herbs for the Nature potions, and there are 3 of them that will actually make your villagers sick. (You get the message "That potion was awful!") You could always MAKE them sick, then have your doctor heal them.
