It'll go faster if you turn the game off, actually; when you boot back up, it'll calculate everything that might have happened in the last few hours, but I find they seem to make more progress when the game is off. (I don't micromanage much.) The game is slow-paced, specifically because it's the type of game you should be able to play 5 minutes a day, and still win.
Advice? Cut back on farmers. One or two is enough - crosstrain (but don't check off) a couple healers as farmers, so that if food gets low, there are skilled villagers; but only check one or two. A healer or two, also. After that, all researchers. That should speed things up. Having only one female parent should ensure a slow growth, without worrying about all your mothers suddenly turning up with babies.
