I know this must be obvious,but...how do you post a smiley?

In the column to the right, underneath the Shout Box, is a list of the smileys and the codes that you can use. Alternatively, if you use the full reply box, rather than "Quick Reply" you will see a menu you can use to insert smileys.

Or, if your smiley is not in this list, you may insert one from somewhere else. You just have to put it as a picture (use the Reply box) with the url adress. For example:

Right click on it, then, at the bottom go to "Property" (I hope it's right, in French it's "Propriété") then copy the Adress (URL) and, in the forum's Reply box, clic on "enter an image" and past it.
