I think it might actually be in the game, because in this guide on GameFAQs, the author writes how much food it's worth, (100) and it is also noted as VERY RARE. I guess that means, either the author went through the image files, found it, and took a wild guess at how much food it would give, or it really is in the game!!!

I just looked through that guide and it seems the author knows a great deal about the game. Either (s)he's played it an awful lot (and timed it all very carefully along the way -- very detailed explanations on timing of everything!) or has gotten some insider info somehow. So it seems plausible that the info on the elusive secret shroom would be right!

I agree; the author has obviously worked hard on the game. The guide is well-written and logical. It's not correct in all respects, though. For instance, when talking about builders gaining skills, s/he refers to getting them to examine/fix the huts. In fact, builders only gain skills through 'fixing' the huts; 'examining' the huts confers no extra skill.

The third type of mushroom must be VERY VERY rare, though, since no-one has ever reported in the forum its appearance in their game!

This is clearly an edited screenshot though. It is possible the shroom was present in the original screen capture, but since it's already an edit I would not want to rely on this image as evidence that it is used by the game.

I think Lurkily means it has obviously been edited by Deathwing. Otherwise the text wouldn't appear. For all we know DW could have also added the giant mushroom. Only DW can say.

No, but I have heard Lady joking about it, and she showed the image files - which had the shroom.

Of course, it's entirely possible that several have seen it without realising. It is only in the early game when food is scarce that most players mushroom-hunt in earnest. In the later stages, with several thousand food available, the addition of 100 points may well not be noticed, even if the player bothered to drop a child on it to pick it up.

I would think we would have at LEAST a couple definitive sightings, by now, with a screenshot from those shocked to find it, though -- it's been long enough.

Becca, you should be sure about something before you post. The only comment I've ever made about that shroom was here, and I've never posted an image of it.

In that thread though, is a screen-shot of a screen-shot of the shroom posted by Robert. A screen shot that is incredibly miniscule. But Robert claims there that he got it in-game. I can't tell from the screenie even which shroom it is, though.

The shroom would have to be in the game. It stands to reason that if it is in the image files, it is in the game.

You mean thread, Lurkily! I don't dispute that others have posted images alleging to show the third mushroom, but Becca claimed that I posted one. I have deliberately avoided posting anything "useful" about that shroom (and the seahorse).

It also stands to reason that KotOR would not include files full of partial and/or broken dialog that isn't used in the game when they ship the product. (Not to mention broken dialog options that ARE used.) Or that Fallout wouldn't ship with dialog, character sprites, and a few props that the game doesn't seem to use anywhere, and were meant for puzzles that weren't in the final game. But things like this happen.

That's why I'd like to see some evidence before I decide that something that is often regarded as an unused artistic asset, may actually be used from time to time. Of course, I'd prefer to see it for myself, but these things never seem to happen to me.

Found evidence against the Secret Shroom.

The image does not exist in carrying.png, which are the images for anything the villagers carry, with the apparent exception of collectibles. The wood for building, rock for exercising, babies, fish, coconuts, the algae-fish, cauldron, the food-bowl are all here. The brown mushroom is here, as is the red shroom, but not the 'secret' shroom.
