I find this quite difficult, particularly as I have to allow for pregnancies. Apart from the effect of one magic fish, is there a fixed number of offspring per pregnancy.

Counting fish can be very difficult in a crowded tank! One way to make that task easier in the Windows version (if you're running in windowed mode) is to 'click and hold' on the title bar of the window. The fish will stop swimming while you're holding the mouse button down, and you can count them much more easily (except, of course, for the fish hiding behind objects in the tank).

Fish will produce one fry with each pregnancy under 'normal' circumstances. The Magic Fish you refer to will increase that number by one, as will one of the plants that's available for purchase in the Supply Shop. So, depending upon what 'extras' you have in your tank, each fish could produce up to 3 offspring, but it's always predictable.

Thanks for that. The other thing I haven't been able to work out is how long a fish pregnancy takes.

A fish pregancy takes 4 hours from pregancy to the babies reaching adulthood. I use double time and advance my system clock by 2 hours.

Fish Tycoon is in real time so there's no "game minutes/hours/years"

But my oldest fish is 189 years old, and I haven't been playing that long!

The fish "age" isn't years. It's hours and that also depends on what speed you have the game set at.

Whatever, but fish age is not measured in real-time hours, at least not on my machine. My oldest fish's age is 198 but I have only been playing for 64 hours, never at double speed.

I guess I'd best do some experiments to find out using one fish as a clock.

Have you used growth hormone? I know the tutorial has you use it on your first fish which would make them older than they technically should be. Mind you, I have not been playing the game long myself. The growth magic fish would also skew the results.
