While it might be a good trick for when food has fallen to below 300 and villagers are dropping work in order to "worry" about it, it doesn't seem like it's necessary to spend time getting your food into the thousands. There is only so much food on the tree. Whether they get it fast or slow doesn't make any difference. You're not going to get more than what is actually there to get.
