This is not quite a spoiler, but mushrooms also appear much, MUCH more frequently while it rains. And this refers to ANY time it rains, naturally or otherwise. This can be a lifesaver during a food shortage.



[spoiler]It's important to note that the chief doesn't point AT anything - the direction he points is for visual effect only. A rare collectible will appear, but it could be anywhere. He absolutely never causes anything except rare collectibles to appear, not even the uncommon mushroom.[/spoiler]
