First off, you don't need to spend the extra $3 for download protection, since you can always download the game from our site for free (or back up the downloaded file on your PC for free). You just need to make sure that you don't lose your registration code.
The trial version is limited to only the very basic portions of the game. You won't be able to purchase most technologies or solve most of the puzzles in the trial version, but you can carry on with a small tribe indefinitely.
