I went away for 2 days and when I came back all my vilagers had died bar two, both just happen to be males. Is there any point carrying on with the game without females?

I've had the same problem with VV2 and VV3. In VV2. I just waited and was fortunate enough to get the "Old Friends" event. I got a female and used her.
In VV3. I had 4 males as well. But...They all passed.
I suggest waiting for an event.

As far as I know the old friends event only exists in VV2.

In VV3 these are the events that give you new people:

[spoiler]Barrel of babies: up to 3 children will arrive.

Canoe from the other side: an adult male who is an Adept Builder.

Crystal of Reflections: twins an existing villager. The clone has the opposite likes and dislikes.

Vial events: twins or triples an existing villager.[/spoiler]
