Everything was going just fine with pushing the statue when on of my villagers died. Everyone in the tribe started moving to bury the dead, including the chief of course. Now I can't get him back to direct the work again. When I drag him back to the same spot he just keeps thinking or being proud of the tribe.

It's not stupid, don't worry; it's a very common problem, actually. There are both issues with where to drop villagers in an advanced stage of the statue project, and as well there are other issues with older versions of the game, so it's an often-seen topic.
