You just have to keep track of when the chief last made magic food. Many people find it convenient to do it at the same time every day, for example every day at noon, have the chief perform all of the special abilities that are available.
That is what I do. Same time everyday! (I have no life hahahaha)
It does make it easier especially at the beginning of the game when there isn't much food.
