My chief died and I have dragged all my "adults" to the robe but none appear to qualify to be chief. I need the chief to finish the game. Will I get another one at some point or am I going to have to start over?

The chief can be a child. Also, if you have any nursing moms, you will need to wait until they've finished nursing to try them or their babies.
