I have not seen this happen yet - sick people go to the medical area, but my doctors just keep studying.

Yes, as skill level increases so does their concern for the sick! By time they are masters they are pretty good about getting to the patients.

They automatically heal the sick only if they are selected (checked) as Doctors!
If they are not, and even if they are Adepts or Masters, They will not do it automatically.

They don't have to be in the medical area for the Healer to help them. I had my game minimized and heard a sneeze so I rushed back to the game and one of my master healers was helping one of my elders near the waterfalls.
