There is a way you can try and manipulate things to give you a better chance at getting an event that will save your tribe. It's not entirely without risk however, so be warned.
I don't know how good of a food supply you've established, but hopefully it would be enough for your villagers to survive unattended for a day. First set your speed to slow and exit from the game entirely. Even when the game is not loaded on the computer, the clock ticks away for your tribe.
What you then do is wait for 24 hours. I think that's how often you get an event, but maybe someone has timed it exactly. Anyway BEFORE you load up the game for the first time that day, you must make a backup folder for your savegame files. You can find instructions for that here:
http://www.ldwforums.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/146371/page/1#Post146371Now when you load up your game, enough time should have passed for there to be a new event. The game is going to recognize that it's time for a new event, so as soon as the game is done loading, you're going to have an event pop up right away. If this event is not one you need to save your tribe, exit out of the game. Replace the current savegame files with the ones you backed up. Load up your VV game again.
Because you have replaced the savegame files with the ones you backed up, the game is going to think you haven't experienced an event for that day yet, so as soon as it's loaded you're going to find yourself with another event. Since events are selected randomly, it most likely will be a different one than the one you just got moments ago. You could probably repeat this process quite a bit in hopes of getting an event that you really need to survive.
I have also noticed that if I exited the game with a nursing child and loaded after enough time has passed for that child to no longer be nursing, that child will be running around as kids in the game do. However, if I end up reverting to the backup savegame files and load the game again, it rerolls the dice so to speak and I could end up with a kid of a different gender and look to the one I had previously.
What I think happens is when the child is done nursing, the game at that point randomly selects the child's gender/looks (with some genetic rules) and clothes. When you reload the game in that fashion, you essentially making the game randomly choose the kid again and could end up with an entirely different child. This could be helpful in situations where you desperately need a baby to be of a certain gender in order to continue with the tribe.
