What is up with the clam?
And have you noticed not only the children, but the adults as well that create a flag shape in the sand? Is there something to it or is it just one of those things to make you go crazy? (the symbol is made by the villagers footprints)

Well, there is something up with the clam...and the orchard! The guides could be helpful here. I have noticed the patterns in the sand, though I thought it looked like a 4-ish, but I don't think it has any effect on the game. Just ambiance and intrigue
