Highlight:

There is a different sound when a collectable shows up that is either rare/uncommon or one you don't have. (not sure which)

I saw a similar comment earlier, but I'm not quite sure I believe it. I've been playing about 3 days now, and frequently hear the "wind chimes" and the "buzzing clicking sound" which I think are insects. I have seen collectibles "appear" both with and without one of these sounds happening at the same time. I suspect that in the early part of the game, that collectibles are appearing so rapidly (thank goodness!) that some people are merely associating their appearance with a sound. If I am wrong, someone with "definitive" proof please correct me and tell me how to change my settings to "hear" the appropriate sound! I have: music off; voice overs about 1/2; and sounds on high. I have my monitor volume at a comfortable level.

There's a small tinkling when something is going to appear. I've noticed that the appearance isn't always right then, perhaps less than a minute. Not sure if the delay is due to the performance issue folks have been talking about. But I do know that things appear more often than not when I hear that sound.

Having said that, I'd give that this could be totally a chance thing except that everytime I've heard the "other" sound, an item appears that I do not have in my collection. The item that appeared right before I posted was a rare shell (giving me all the shells). This other sound is markedly different in that there is a tinkeling and a sort of soft gong sound.

I heard the "soft gong" sound when my chief was "Pointing out a rare collectible" to a child, (one which I did not have yet) First time I think I've heard it though.

I hear the small tinkling noise every time I'm at the ocean screen...and there's not always a collectible hanging around anywhere.

I'll experiment on the tinkling at the ocean and see what I get.

I am currently at level 2 with everything, so I don't have the 3rd level leadership yet. I've noticed the
highlight:
soft gong sound
on more than one occassion and it always indicated a new item of some sort.. now it may be that it's only on the rare items, I have two items left to get 1 rare and 1 uncommon, so I may get an opportunity to verify this go round.

Yes, I've noticed and it seems consistent (still testing). Highlight: Seems to be louder for a rare item, and I suspect that it does not happen if it is an item you've collected before. If I've heard the sound and do not see an item, I pause and look more carefully.

I think, as with prior VV games, its just coincidence. Mine just chimed three separate times and nothing has showed up anywhere.

Ok, I've had a major run on collectables/mushies and got the tinkling once. So I'm going with coincendence... the tinkle happened when I noticed two items at the ocean, then for the rest - nothing. The run was about 10-12 items to get (lucky me!!) grin

I am still holding out for the "other" sound indicating rare items.

Yesterday when I was playing, it really seemed like it was louder for the rare items and I was getting hits every time. Maybe just luck?

Ok, I've verified, and the tinkling sound is just coincidence. The soft gong however, appears to be the real thing, but only for "rare" collectibles.

i mixed lotus, tiger lily and rose and it blew up and killed my adept scientist, very sad - dead at 21 of a work accident.

think the tinkling is just wind chimes on upper right corner like the owl hooting.

hi Monacat, yeah, we have played 1 &2 forever it seems like, gotta get those 50,000 points to get level 2 so you can make the potion to get rid of the sharks so they can fish. potion, is orchid, orchid, pitcher, just have an adult drink it and they go and dump some in the ocean. would love to find the other tree seeds, no answer so far. take care.........

That recipe only works in one of the factions; the other one has a different special plant.

right i forgot to mention that, finally got the tree seeds, duh, was fun to watch them do it tho'

I believe the "tinkling chimes" are to alert you that a collectible has just appeared somewhere.
