as for the collectibles, if you put two kids on one when the game is not on pause, you can get two of the same item. it can be tough, you have to get the timing just right, but its possible.
I usually buy the cheapest things first unless you have been having an especially tough time w/ one thing, say everyone getting sick, in that case I'd try to get medicine next

Since I chose the Magic option I wanted to get the ocean "shark friendly" so my tribe wouldn't starve. I concentrated on the two things I needed to get to that goal. So I guess I would answer by saying what is your goal. That I think that helps to determine your next purchase.
