Try again. The blowups will not go away completely until you have L3 of Alchemy tech.

You won't necessarily get the pitcher plant. There are special plants that appear with Level 2 of Magic or Nature Faction. There are other sources of food available before this.

My villagers are dying and I have done everything for food. I think maybe the makers should have done this a little better.
