There are some things that you can try. The first (likely) cause of your problems is a corrupted savegame file. To recover from that you need to completely uninstall the game using the Palm OS delete function and reinstall the game. Also, a little tip - your game data is not saved until you exit the game, which is why you keep losing your game in progress. It's always a good idea to save your game regularly to preserve your accomplishments. There is a patched version of Village Sim that prevents crashes upon starting a new game, but it doesn't sound like that's your problem. Just in case, though, you can install the
VillageSimFixed version after you uninstall the game.
Treos are a little trickier than non-phone PDAs because they are doing a lot more at the same time. I've heard of problems caused by having VersaMail issues, as well as "down-level" Treo software. Make sure that you have the latest version of the Treo software (check the Palm site) and the latest VersaMail.
