I researched a couple of villager names at reference.com and found a few interesting meanings. I also saw Unagi at a sushi shop and was wondering what it meant, that is what motivated me to research the names. Poema - puma in dutch Unagi - an eel Tuna - a type of fish (as we all know) Ashby - a city in america City - a large town Huka - load Zen - chinese buddhism If you have any more feel free to post them.

How did you get villagers with the names "Poema" and "Ashby"?? Also, Bali is an island in Indonesia.

"Malo" means bad in Spanish. I also saw someone post that "Kissa" means cat in Finnish.

I made an interesting discovery about Tofo. Tofo-Sant'Eleuterio and Tofo-villa are villages in Italy. Lol, Isola is in the online dictionary, so is Virtual Villagers. And Isola is italian for "island" You probably all knew that already though

Anyone know what Shuka means? Shúkà is the Maa word for sheets traditionally worn wrapped around the body, one over each shoulder, then a third over the top of them. These are typically red, though with some other colors (e.g. blue) and patterns (e.g. plaid.) Pink, even with flowers, is not shunned by warriors.

Anyone know what these mean:
Hika
Tepoto
Hoto
Onawa
Hebe - I think this one might possibly be a Greek, Roman or Norse mythological name, but I'm not sure.
Torak - I thought this was pretty cool when I saw this one. This was the name of the villian in one of the Ewok movies I believe.
Balun
Ipo
Daku
Toki
Lupa - I keep thinking of wolves when I see this one lol.
Pago
Hokou
Lapis - isn't this a gemstone or something?
Ponui
Sona
Amago
Mabu
Nanu- other than being Mork's saying, what does this mean?
Iona
Kappa
Laki
Elaku
Kumi
Kai
Pippa
Bixa
Atepa
Akio
Mem
Babaco
Nofo
Rapa
Coho
Weeko

I didn’t find them all, but here’s what I did find. Tepoto is a coral island
Hoto is a Japanese dish
Onawa is a city in Iowa
Hebe, in Greek mythology, is the Goddess of youth Toki is the Japanese name for the Crested Ibis; also bunny rabbit in Korean
Lupa - I keep thinking of wolves when I see this one lol. Lapis - isn't this a gemstone or something? Sona is a Hindi name, also a Hindi word that means ‘gold’ Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland.
Kappa is the 10th letter of the Greek alphabet.
Kai is a Polynesian and Hawaiian word/name meaning "big water", "the ocean", "the sea"; Makai means "towards big water". In Welsh and Scandinavian cultures, Kai means "keeper of the keys; earth". In Burmese, Kai means "strong", or "unbreakable". In Japanese, Kai has several meanings, including "change" or "the action to correct", "mediation" or "concerning oneself with", as well as "sea" (the last definition possibly derived from Polynesian languages). Kai in the Navajo language means "willow tree."
Mem (also spelled Meem or Mim) is the thirteenth letter of many Semitic abjads, including Phoenician, Aramaic, Hebrew and Arabic alphabet.
Rapa Nui is the native name of Easter Island.
There is a type of fish called the Coho salmon.

I found a name that I think would fit in with the other villager names. Shiva ~ meaning Beauty. It's a female name, of course. I think, in my next tribe (which I'll be writing about), I'm going to use some of these names I'm discovering.

Anyone know what Waka and Laka mean? Didn't one of the muppets always say "Waka Waka"? LOL Waka is poetry written in Japanese. All I could find on laka is that its an acronym. Same for Kei and Lala. Couldn't find Kazua or Piku or Tutuni. I found some of the ones I asked about: Torak is the name of the dragon god of Angarak in the Belgariad series. Anyone ever heard of this series? Is it a book series or comic book, show, etc. I'm not 100% sure anymore if the villian on that Ewok movie was named Torak. I'll have to watch the movie again to find out for sure. It may be that I'm getting him confused with Hordak (spelling may not be right) which was the main villian on the She-ra cartoon (for those who don't know, She-ra was He-man's twin sister). Hordak and the villian from the Ewok movie kind of look alike anyway LOL... except for the fact that Hordak was a cartoon and the other was a guy in a suit/makeup LOL. Mabu has something to do with Martial Arts. It's some kind of stance or something.

Laki was on the original list - that's the name of a volcano in Iceland. I don't know about Laka. I was going to comment about Torak from the Belgariad, too - you beat me to it! My favorite villager name is still Ahi - yellowfin tuna (mmm...ahi sushi....)

You can actually put the c cedille (ç) by pressing Alt with 135 using the number pad on the right of your keyboard (at least if you have a PC, not sure how to do it with a Mac) Keep in mind though, that if you tried to type it in here, it will show up weird in the preview post section but looks fine when you submit the post. Oh, and I only know this because j'étudie le français et maintenant, j'enseigne le français. And in response to the question about Hebe being from the Greek... it is part of the Greek mythology. You can find a short summary of it HERE .

Hebe is the Greek goddess of youth. I have a list of all the gods and goddesses in mythology (well not ALL of them, but a bunch of them lol). My brother has this book called the book of names or something to that effect. It's got the names of mythological characters, literature related characters, etc. That's what I got the list of gods and goddesses from. Well, some of them. Others were in the dictionary we have LOL.
By the way, if anyone wants the lists I have (in order to have names for your villagers if you don't like the ones they are given by the game), let me know. I'm not sure how to attach them to a post, but I'm sure I could probably figure it out LOL. I have the Gods and Goddesses list and a list of the names of Muses.
Also, here's a tip that I've found kind of useful at times: If you don't like the name of a villager given by the game, try it backwards. It works with some names (definitely not all names lol). For example, Niles backwards is Selin.

Is it wrong that I often change my villagers names when they are born?

Is it wrong that I often change my villagers names when they are born? Nope, its up to you. I love changing villagers names. I feel that it makes them more special and unique. Also: Swahili - a tanzanian language and an inhabitant of coastal eastern Africa Toto - The default scratch file name among French-speaking programmers Oro - gold in spanish and italian Salote - the queen of Tonga Kalau - "if" in indonesian If you want to know what any more names mean, I would be happy to research them for you.

I don't think Hebe is Greek, and I looked at every greek mythology book in my school library. According to the Wikipedia, SupernaturalJem is right! In Greek mythology, Hebe was the goddess of youth. The name Hebe comes from the Greek word meaning "youth" or "prime of life". Hebe was the cupbearer for the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus, serving their nectar and ambrosia, until she married Herakles (Roman equivalent: Hercules). Hebe: Greek goddess of youth.

Pippa is also the diminuitive of Philippa. (lover of horses) Bixa is derived from the Nahuatl word for shrub, and is a genus of plants. It is not a last name or surname, as far as I can tell. The closest is 'Bax,' a variant of Baxter, which means "Baker". Atepa is apparently a Choctaw name meaning 'wigwam'. (?!?) A wigwam is a domed, single-room dwelling used by some Native American tribes. Here's a picture of one. Weeka is something that I personally can't easily find. Ah well. Soda may come from the name of a mineral, or alternately, a plant that when burned, leaves soda (the mineral) in its ashes. (Sodanum, in latin) Swahili is a boy's name of Arabic origin, and means "Coast people". Toto is a name of Swahili origin (weird) meaning "Little one." Oro, as mentioned, is a spanish name meaning 'gold'. (Some sources list this as 'golden'.) Salote, is surprisingly, a Germanic name, meaning "Free man." Kalau is apparantly is variant of Kalu or Kaalu, and is a Hindu name meaning "Father of Nanak," who is the founder of the Sikh religion. I would have posted here earlier, but was too lazy to look this stuff up. I'm also too lazy to write down names, so I'm just further investigating what I find here.

1) Any of various forms of sodium carbonate. 2) Chemically combined sodium. See carbonated water. Chiefly Northeastern U.S., Eastern Missouri, & Southwestern Illinois. See soft drink. See Regional Note at tonic. A refreshment made from carbonated water, ice cream, and usually a flavoring. Games. The card turned face up at the beginning of faro. [Middle English sode, soda, saltwort, soda, from Old Italian soda, perhaps from Arabic suwayd, soda, soda-plant or suwayda, type of saltwort.]

I don't know if it's been posted about, but Aponi (which I've seen in VV1, I think) is a Native American name that means Butterfly.

I've gotten Waikiki, which is a place; Pinot, which is a type of wine; Panini, which is a type of food; Wasabi, which is that green paste you eat with sushi; and Kenya, which is a country.
