I haven't done any scientific studies, but it appears that my villagers eat more / gather less food when my Palm is turned off. When it is off, my food levels typically go down at a faster rate. Now obviously it varies according to how many farmers I have, but that being constant, my food levels will be higher over the same time period if the Palm is left on.

Right now I have my Palm turned on in the cradle with the game running and my food levels are definitely increasing at a faster pace.

Over an extended period of time (I let the game run on slow speed at night while sleeping, it doesn't seem to be a problem. I don't run out of food or anything. I just notice it when I check in every 10 minutes or so.

Your observation is correct. That is a known game balance issue which will be adjusted when the v1.1 update is released. I have run many, many tests to determine exactly what the game is doing at different game speeds and difficulty settings, both when the Palm is on and when it is off.
